Kolobok: A Russian Bun on the Run!
Translated and adapted by Sian Valvis; illustrations by Dovile Ciapaite

Winner of English Pen – Pen Translates award 2021
Nominated for Klaus Flugge Illustration award 2022

With this adaptation in rhyme of a well-known Russian folk tale, Sian Valvis traces the adventures of the kolobok, or bun, as he encounters and outwits various animals along his way - until he meets the wily fox. The book is beautifully illustrated by  Dovile Ciapaite.

With echoes of The Gingerbread Man, Kolobok's repeated phrases and song make it the perfect book for children from when are they first read to – and a book that adults will enjoy reading to them over and again – but also for early readers.

For this contemporary adaptation of a traditional tale, Sian has been recognised by English PEN, becoming one of only 12 books from all categories to be awarded the prestigious PEN Translates award for 2021. For more information, see here.

February 2022: Dovile Ciapaite's illustrations for Kolobok have been nominated for the 2022 Klaus Flugge prize. More information here.

The latest addition to my 2-year-old's Anglo-Russian library is a contemporary adaptation of the famous Russian folk tale Kolobok. The first time my husband read it to my son I could hear him gasp from the other room. For him it is like a thriller. Will Kolobok ever be free? Will he survive? Kolobok, a Russian bun on the run, has taken a proud place amongst other favourites, knocking off Peppa Pig’s Royal Party from its top spot (a true victory!) (Alina Gainard, Pushkin House)

As I read Kolobok: A Russian bun on the run, Siân Valvis’s adaptation of a classic Slavic folktale, with my five-year-old daughter, we marvelled at the striking, block-printed illustrations and giggled at the jaunty, rhyming verse. This book is a true delight!  (Jane Bugaeva, East-West Review – full text here)
